Understanding Ethernet Types

You can essentially think of ethernet cabling as the piping or plumbing of the internet. In order to understand integration and network installation, you need to know the various ethernet types, which include Cat5e or Cat6 cables that come with RJ45 connectors.

However, the term ethernet itself includes fiber and twisted pair cables, both of which are always going through changes and becoming standardized through the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Category 5e

These are cables that have been around for the better part of 15 years. When these cables came out, it was the introduction of a1 gig network. You will often find that Cat5e cables are twisted pair 24-gauge wires that can emit a gigabit network spanning a distance of up to 328 feet.

Category 6

These cables came out a few years after the introduction of Cat53, which came with the capability for a 10 gig network. However, it is important to note that the Cat6 cables will only be limited to a range of 164 feet.
